Companions

A companion is an AI character who travels with you, fights at your side, and talks with you in the game. They are a real character on your own account, with their own gear, bags, levels and professions, and they follow you onto whichever of your characters you log in with. You get one per account.

You build them here on the site, not in the game. Create an account, sign in, and open Companion.

Building one

The builder works like the game's own character screen. Pick any of the ten races from either faction, one of nine classes (no death knights, and the usual race and class rules apply, so no tauren mages), two primary professions, a look and a name. Then you draw the Story Path cards that decide who they are.

They are created the next time you enter the world, and join you a few seconds later. Every companion starts at level 1 and earns experience by playing alongside you. When you hand in a quest they could not pick up, they get the experience for it anyway, so they do not fall behind on your quest log.

Each class starts on its most forgiving tree:

WarriorProtection
PaladinHoly
HunterSurvival
RogueSubtlety
PriestDiscipline
ShamanRestoration
MageFrost
WarlockDemonology
DruidRestoration

To switch, type .eureka spec and the tree's name, for example .eureka spec holy, or use the Spec buttons on their sheet. The first switch is free; after that it is once an hour. Typing .eureka spec on its own tells you what they play now and how long until they can change. They learn their class spells by themselves as they level, so there is no trainer to visit.

Talking to them

Talk to them the way you would talk to anyone: in party chat, out loud, or in a whisper. They answer on the same channel, and they will say something when they level, finish a quest, find a drop or come back from town. They remember what the two of you have done.

A line that starts with a game command, like follow or stay, is treated as an order instead of conversation; the Playerbots page has the useful ones. Ask them for something the game has to do, like taking you to a quest, and they will ask first. Say yes and they go.

Three words set how they fight. Say one of them on its own, or type .eureka stance followed by it.

defensiveThe default. They fight whatever attacks either of you, and start nothing.
aggressiveThey attack anything within about twenty yards, including neutral animals like deer.
passiveThey never swing, however hard they are hit. While passive they also stop looting, gathering, eating and drinking, so it is for walking somewhere, not for hunting.

The companion sheet

Type /companion or /cm, or click the minimap button. It shows their equipment, their bags at their real sizes, their gold and what they are doing. You need to be within 11 yards of them to move anything.

Give them an itemDrag it onto the window.
Take an itemLeft click it in their bags.
Equip it on themRight click it in their bags.
Take gear offClick it on their equipment.
Sell an itemShift and click, with a vendor's window open.
Keep an itemControl and click. Kept items are never sold.
Destroy an itemAlt and right click. You get the game's usual question first.

They do not change their own gear. When something in their bags would be an upgrade, they tell you what it is and which slot it goes in, and you put it on them from the sheet. They also will not open a trade window; the sheet is how things move between you.

The Jobs tab sends them gathering. It lists every herb, vein and other resource near you that their professions can collect, greys out the ones they cannot and says why. Pick one, say how many, and send them. The tab shows how they are doing, and one button calls them home with whatever they have so far.

On the road

If you get more than 80 yards apart, or you change maps, they catch up by teleporting to you. It waits until neither of you is in combat. It never teleports them into a dungeon or out of a battleground match; for a dungeon, they come in with the group.

The Sell items button on the sheet sells everything in their bags that you have not marked to keep, so mark the things you want first. If you are standing at a vendor they sell right there. Otherwise they use their own hearthstone, which has a 30 minute cooldown, to go to town, sell, repair, and come back about five minutes later.

In a group they roll need or greed on loot like anyone else, and the rolls show in everyone's loot window. They can only roll need on something that is a real upgrade for them, so they cannot take a drop someone else needs.

The quest log and the world map both have a Lead the way button. Press it on a quest and they offer to walk you to it, following the roads where there are some.

Starting over

You can dismiss a companion from the Companion page and build a new one. The new one starts again at level 1, so it is worth being sure. If a companion is stuck as pending or failed, the Companion page says what it is waiting for.
